About the event

This is a first attempt to explore what is needed amongst our local community of women and mothers grieving the loss of pregnancy or the death of their children. I hope it will be the first of many.

It is important to say that whatever form(s) your loss has taken, it is valid and welcome. It is not too big, or too small for this group. Whether it was 20 years ago, or this year; whether it was of your own 'choosing' or not; whether you feel you have grieved and 'dealt' with it, or you have pushed it to the furthest recesses of your mind. You are sincerely welcome to bring it to this group.

Our culture on the whole doesn't deal well with grief  - we may not know how to be around other people's grief, and we may not know how to cope with our own grief.

I do not claim to be an expert on this subject. I have walked my own path of miscarriage and termination in pregnancy, as well as losing my mum in my 20s, so I have some experience of bereavement and the grief that accompanies it for me. I am also undergoing a 1 year course as a Death Doula which is what prompted me to begin to explore this work more deeply with Mothers. This also means that I have a community of death doulas to lean into that can support our work in this group.

Outline of Sessions:

Weeks 1 & 2:

- Creating a safe container

- Identifying our needs and intentions

- Naming and honouring our losses

- Introducing ritual and ceremony

Week 3:

- Grief Ceremony

Building on the work of the previous weeks we will identify a shape and form for this ceremony that aims to meet everybody's needs and that respects and honours all world views and religious or spiritual beliefs. The aim is to create a space that feels safe enough for each person's grief to be deeply felt and given expression - in whatever way it presents itself in that moment.

There are many possibilities for the shape and form of this Ceremony. I have some experience in Grief Ceremonies held by others. I also have lots of experience of 'Closing Ceremonies' that I have been holding for many years with mothers, following birth and/or miscarriage. I have immense faith in the instincts of women and mothers, and I trust in the wisdom that unfolds when we come together. This will be a co-created Ceremony which I will facilitate.

I know that this is potentially a big thing to step in to, so please do contact me if you would like to speak to me before booking.

My hope is that through this deep work we can continue to tend to our broken hearts, to the wounded places; that through our grief we can find our love and our passion for life. I hope if this speaks to you that you will be able to join us.
